Placing History Group

Status:Active, open to new members
Leader:
When: On Thursday mornings 10:00 AM
2nd Thursday of the month
Venue: Methodist Church, Rear Room

In each session we take a particular place and explore the history attached to that place. Sometimes we look at the events at that location around a particular time in history, for example, using Hardwick Hall we looked at some Tudor history. Sometimes we follow events happening somewhere through a longer period of time, for example we followed the history of Leeds from the Middle Ages to the present.

Many of our sessions are presented with illustrated material. All members of the group are invited to lead sessions if they wish to do so and during sessions everyone is encouraged to raise questions or challenge ideas for discussion as we go along.

Where have we ‘been’? A few examples follow.

  • Cranford on the Bath Road
  • Caen, Pevensey and Battle - 1066
  • Stirling Castle and the Stuart Kings of Scotland
  • Mapping Britain
  • Nostalgia to History. Using the memories and experiences of the group to explore the 1950s and 60s.
  • Surprised by History in Chiswick!
  • History of Quantity Surveying
  • Fountains Abbey and Medieval Monasticism
  • Medieval Exeter
  • London’s Early Underground Railway
